Between 17 December 1930 and 15 January 1931, Balbo led a squadron of Savoia-Marchetti S.55 flying boats from the seaplane base at Orbetello to Rio de Janeiro, a crossing of the South Atlantic that no group of aircraft had attempted before. The flight made Balbo a celebrity and was heavily promoted by the Italian government, including in newsreels filmed by the Istituto Luce.
