Delta commissioned paintings of its destinations for posters in the 1970s, and works like these were reproduced for display in airports and travel agencies. The airline itself had come a long way from its 1925 beginnings as a crop-dusting company in the Mississippi River Delta, which gave Delta its name; passenger service followed in 1929, and in 1959 Delta became the first airline to fly the Douglas DC-8.
