Styled like an airmail label, this small piece shows a white seabird gliding across a pale blue sky with the words "Save by flying Loftleidir" and a red "Par Avion." Saving money was exactly the airline's pitch. Founded in 1944, Loftleiðir stayed out of IATA and routed flights via Reykjavík, letting it sell transatlantic tickets well below its rivals. Travellers were given labels like this to put on their luggage. In 1973 Loftleiðir and Flugfélag Íslands came together under Flugleiðir, the forerunner of Icelandair.
