The A-6 Intruder was a carrier-based twin Jet-engine all weather attack aircraft operated by the US Navy and Marine Corps between 1963 and 1997. A-6 intruders first saw action during the Vietnam War, where the aircraft's long range and heavy payload coupled with its ability to fly in all-weather made it invaluable during the war. The Intruder's side by side seating enhanced its ability to fulfill its typical mission profile of flying low to deliver its payload. The intruder used vastly upgraded navigation and attack systems and advanced radar to navigate through mountain valleys at low levels in order to minimize the aircraft's risk from enemy radar-guided missles. The VA-52 Knightriders were proud operators of the Intruder from November 1967 to December 1994. They became the most decoraed Intruder squadron for its sustained efforts during the Vietnam War.
