Spirit Airlines History
Spirit Airlines grew from a Detroit charter company into America's best-known ultra-low-cost carrier, then flew its last flight in May 2026. Here's a short history of Spirit, plus the Spirit Airlines collection that celebrates it.
Charter roots in Michigan (1964-1992)
Spirit's corporate story starts in 1964 with the Clippert Trucking Company, renamed Ground Air Transfer in 1974. In 1983 Ned Homfeld founded Charter One Airlines in Macomb County, Michigan, flying tour charters out of Detroit. In 1992 the company began flying McDonnell Douglas DC-9 and MD-80 jets and took the Spirit Airlines name.
Scheduled service and a move to Florida (1992-2005)
Spirit's first scheduled flight, on June 1, 1992, linked Detroit with Atlantic City. Flights from Boston and Providence to Atlantic City followed two weeks later. By 1994 the network also reached Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, St. Petersburg, Fort Myers and Philadelphia. In December 1999 Spirit moved its headquarters from Eastpointe, Michigan, to Miramar, Florida. The Airbus A319 joined the fleet in 2005, and the DC-9 family jets were phased out over the following years.
The ultra-low-cost years (2006-2024)
After Indigo Partners invested in 2006, CEO Ben Baldanza steered Spirit to an ultra-low-cost model: very low base fares, with extras sold separately. In September 2014 the airline unveiled its bright yellow livery. In 2022 Frontier agreed to merge with Spirit, but shareholders turned that deal down and accepted an offer from JetBlue instead. A federal judge blocked the JetBlue purchase on January 16, 2024, and the two airlines ended their agreement that March. Spirit opened a new headquarters in Dania Beach, Florida, in 2024.
Two bankruptcies and a final flight (2024-2026)
Spirit filed for Chapter 11 on November 18, 2024, and came out of it in 2025, only to file again on August 29, 2025. In December 2025 it still flew 131 Airbus A320-family jets. Higher fuel prices in 2026 deepened its losses, and talks on a rescue deal failed. Spirit stopped all flying and began winding down on May 2, 2026. Its last flight, NK1833, left Detroit, the city where its scheduled service began, and landed at Dallas/Fort Worth shortly after midnight.
