René Gruau (1909–2004), one of the great fashion illustrators of the twentieth century, created this Air France poster for the French Riviera around 1962. With his trademark economy of line, he reduces the Côte d'Azur to a single image: a giant yellow straw sun hat set against an open blue sky, all the sunshine and leisure of the Riviera in one bold shape. Its strong color contrasts and minimal composition made it one of the most memorable Air France posters of the early jet age.
