Air France was formed in 1933 from a merger of five French airlines, and the winged seahorse, the hippocampe ailé, came from one of them, Air Orient, which had used it since 1929. It was meant to show that aircraft could cross the seas and make the world smaller. Passengers were given labels like this one for their luggage.
