Red cactus blossoms burst from the foreground of a glowing orange desert in this early-1970s poster for American Airlines. Rather than the Grand Canyon or a cowboy, the designer chose the desert in bloom, the short spring season when prickly pear and other cacti flower across the Southwest. The poster belongs to the bright, flat-color destination series American issued around 1970 and 1971, when the airline's posters moved away from the detailed illustration of the 1960s toward simpler, bolder graphics. The artist is not recorded.
