Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890–1954), one of the most celebrated poster designers of the 20th century, made this view of Niagara Falls for American Airlines around 1950. The falls pour down beneath a clear blue sky, with a maple leaf nodding to the Canadian side and the title set in bold, stylized lettering. Kauffer had built his reputation in London, designing for London Transport and Shell, before returning to the United States in 1940, where his long series of posters for American Airlines became some of the finest of the postwar era.
