E. McKnight Kauffer (1890–1954), the American-born designer famous for his London Underground posters, created this night view of Washington for American Airlines in 1948. The Capitol dome glows under a navy sky filled with white and blue stars, with bold red, white and blue lettering and the airline's eagle emblem below. The Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, which holds a copy, titles it "American Airlines to Washington, Night and Day." Kauffer returned to the United States in 1940 and produced a series of destination posters for American in the late 1940s.
