Washington society turns out for an evening at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in this American Airlines poster from the early 1970s, washed in warm orange and red. A crowd in evening dress fills the foreground, with the Capitol in the distance under a starry sky. The Kennedy Center, designed by Edward Durell Stone, opened on the Potomac in September 1971, and this poster sold the capital as a destination for the performing arts as well as its monuments. The artist is not recorded.
