Spinning propellers and a sleek airliner sweep across a pale blue ground in this British European Airways poster, with a list of the cities on the airline's network setting out just how much of Europe it covered. The artist is not recorded. BEA was formed by the British government in 1946 to fly Britain's domestic and European routes, and in 1953 it became the first airline to operate scheduled passenger services with a turboprop, the Vickers Viscount, whose smooth, quiet ride made it the backbone of the BEA fleet through the 1950s.
