The pale silhouette of an airliner crosses this round BEA label, its lower half a bright yellow field carrying the big red letters "BEA," with "British European Airways" arched around the rim. BEA began on 1 January 1946 and became a separate state corporation that August, later making Heathrow its main base. It flew the world's first turbine-powered commercial service in 1950 with a Vickers Viscount, and on 1 April 1974 it merged with BOAC to form British Airways.
