The golden Speedbird soars above the letters B.O.A.C. on this navy roundel, over a map of routes stretching from Britain across Africa, Asia and on to Australia. A banner names BOAC's partners on those routes: Qantas Empire Airways, South African Airways and Tasman Empire Airways. BOAC, the British Overseas Airways Corporation, later made history on 2 May 1952 with the world's first jet airliner passenger service, and in 1974 it merged with BEA to form British Airways.
