"Travel British Continental Airways Ltd – avoid being held up" runs the wry slogan of this teal vintage-style poster, promising a quicker way to the Continent than the boat train. British Continental Airways was founded on 15 April 1935 to fly from Croydon Airport, then London's air terminal, to Belgium, and soon added Ostend, Antwerp, Lille and Amsterdam. In early 1936 it extended the Amsterdam route to Scandinavia, putting it in direct competition with the subsidized British Airways Ltd, and the government steered the two together: from 1 August 1936 the company was merged into British Airways. This is a modern design in the vintage manner, with no recorded artist.
