A white arrow and a speeding airliner streak across a deep blue sky in this early-1930s Art Deco poster for CIDNA, the Compagnie Internationale de Navigation Aérienne. It is the work of French illustrator Edmond Maurus, and it advertises the "Flèche d'Orient," or Orient Flying Arrow, the airline's service from Paris to Istanbul, then still widely called Stamboul. CIDNA, a Franco-Romanian company founded in 1920, promised that passengers, freight and mail could cross Europe to the Bosphorus in a single day. In 1933 it became one of the airlines merged to form the new Air France, which kept the Flèche d'Orient name alive.
