Runway 18L/36R was built as traffic grew after Delta opened its Cincinnati hub in the mid-1980s. The airport, which opened to airline service in January 1947, carried the Greater Cincinnati International name from 1978 until the start of 1992, when it became Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
