Condor, the German leisure airline, was founded on 21 December 1955 as Deutsche Flugdienst GmbH and adopted the Condor name in 1961, when it took over the rival Condor-Luftreederei. Lufthansa was an original shareholder and became the sole owner by 1960, making Condor its holiday arm for decades.
