A red bird in flight sits in a blue disc, circled by silver lettering that reads 'Fly Eastern Air Lines - The Great Silver Fleet.' The Great Silver Fleet was the name of Eastern's well-known fleet of Douglas DC-2s on the East Coast, and one of them was the first commercial airplane to land at Washington's new National Airport in June 1941. The fleet was set up by World War I ace Eddie Rickenbacker, who bought control of Eastern in 1938 and retired at the end of 1963.
