This small square label pairs a bold red field with a gold border and a sweep of fine diagonal stripes, with Hebrew lettering and the El Al name at its foot, a compact piece of cabin-class baggage identification. El Al became Israel's national flag carrier in November 1948, and its name, chosen by the first Minister of Transport, David Remez, comes from the Book of Hosea and means upwards or to the skies. Its first scheduled international flight, Tel Aviv to Paris, followed in July 1949.
