Golden EL AL lettering and two stars crown this navy roundel, with ISRAEL AIRLINES curving around the lower edge and, at the centre, a pair of white wings spread around a light blue star of David, framed by the airline's name in Hebrew. El Al, whose name means upwards or to the skies, became Israel's national airline in November 1948 and flew its first scheduled international service, from Tel Aviv to Paris via Rome, on 31 July 1949.
