This 1954 poster for Iberia, Lineas Aereas Espanolas, sets the billowing sails of a Spanish galleon beside a modern airliner. The comparison was deliberate: Spain's sailing ships had once carried explorers and traders across the Atlantic, and now the national airline was flying the same ocean routes in a matter of hours. Linking the country's seafaring past with the new age of air travel was a recurring theme in Iberia's advertising of the 1950s, and the ship-and-plane pairing makes the point at a glance. The artist is not recorded on our copy.
