Mount Fuji rises above a still lake framed by pines in this 1930s poster from the Japanese Government Railways. The railway ministry produced English-language posters and postcards to draw overseas visitors, and "peerless" was a word it attached to the mountain more than once; a railway-department postcard captioned "Mt. Fuji peerless for beauty in the Island Empire of Japan" survives in Tohoku University's Kano Collection. Here the composition does the work: water, trees and the snow-capped cone in classic balance. The artist is not recorded.
