Pale and quiet, this 1930s Japanese Government Railways poster shows Mount Fuji framed by dark pine branches, with little more than the single word "Japan" to carry the message. The railways ministry issued posters like this in English to bring foreign travelers to Japan by sea and then onward by train, at a time when the country was actively courting overseas tourism. The soft palette and borrowed framing of the pines owe much to the woodblock-print tradition. The artist is not recorded.
