A blue globe traced with the air route between Batavia and Amsterdam fills this early-1930s KLM poster, which promises “2 per week in 5 1/2 days.” Batavia, today's Jakarta, was the capital of the Dutch East Indies, and KLM's service there was one of the longest scheduled air routes in the world, stopping across the Middle East and South Asia along the way. Cutting the journey from weeks by steamship to under a week by air was the whole message, and the globe shows just how far the airliners flew.
