For KLM Royal Dutch Air Lines, Australia sat at the end of one of its longest routes, reached from Amsterdam by way of Asia. The airline's ties to the region ran deep: KLM's DC-2 “Uiver” made headlines in the 1934 MacRobertson air race from England to Melbourne.
