Red script spelling "Lake Central" sweeps across a pale blue map of the Great Lakes, under the proud slogan "Serving the Industrial Heart of the Nation." The Indianapolis-based carrier, founded as Turner Airlines in 1948, linked the factory towns of Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan and beyond with DC-3s, Convairs and later Nord 262 turboprops. Lake Central handed stickers like this to passengers for their suitcases. The airline merged into Allegheny Airlines in July 1968, part of the family tree that leads to today's American Airlines.
