A graceful Moorish arch frames a view of domes and rooftops in this 1920 poster for Palermo, the Sicilian capital. It carries the name A. Marzi, and little more is documented about who designed it. The arch and domes nod to the city's layered past: Palermo was ruled by Arab emirs before the Normans took it in the 11th century, and its Norman kings built churches and palaces that blended Islamic, Byzantine and Latin styles, some crowned with distinctive red domes. That Arab-Norman heritage is now recognized by UNESCO and was already a lure for travelers when this poster was printed.
