Pan American World Airways invited travelers to "Fly to Britain by Clipper" with an image built from London at its most ceremonial. A mounted trooper of the Household Cavalry sits tall in the saddle in full dress uniform, while the clock tower of Big Ben rises behind him over Westminster. The artist is not recorded. Pan Am called its airliners Clippers, after the fast sailing ships of the nineteenth century, and the "by Clipper" line ran across its travel posters for decades, tying every destination to the same promise of speed and polish on the Atlantic crossing.
