Paul George Lawler drew this 1938 poster for Pan American Airways' "It's a Small World" series, which the airline launched in 1937 to sell its fast-growing Latin American network. A Guatemalan woman carrying a jar stands beneath an arch, with Guatemala City's cathedral, a mountain and a Douglas DC-2 airliner in the scene behind her, in blues, reds and yellows. The poster announced Pan Am's new service to Guatemala, aimed at well-off travelers who could now reach Central America in hours rather than days. In the late 1930s Pan Am was the first carrier to run fast scheduled flights throughout Central and South America.
