Cuban dancers, white doves and the silhouette of Morro Castle share a deep navy night in this Pan American poster for Havana from around 1940. The castle, a Spanish fortress guarding the entrance to Havana harbor, was the city's best-known landmark, and the dancers add the music and nightlife that made Havana a favorite getaway for Americans. The artist is not recorded. Havana had a special place in the airline's story: Pan American's very first scheduled flight, in 1927, carried mail from Key West to the Cuban capital, and the short hop remained one of its signature routes.
