Surfers ride the waves behind a screen of palm fronds in this 1950 Pan Am poster for Hawaii, washed in cool teal. Surfing, born in the Hawaiian Islands and revived at Waikiki in the early twentieth century, was by mid-century the island image travelers wanted to see. The artist is not recorded. Nineteen fifty was the year the airline renamed itself Pan American World Airways, and by then the flying boats of the 1930s had given way to landplanes that carried far more passengers to Honolulu, helping turn Hawaii into a mass tourist destination.
