This 1960 Pan Am poster for Hawaii takes a bold, graphic approach: instead of a full figure, the design moves in close on the swaying grass skirt of a hula dancer, set against a warm orange ground. The cropped composition and flat, saturated color are typical of airline poster design at the turn of the 1960s, in the early years of Pan Am's jet service, when Hawaii was being marketed to mainland travelers as an easy tropical escape. The artist is not recorded, but the image remains one of the most striking of the airline's island posters.
