This vintage-style poster art for Pan Am carries the line "India and the Orient by Clipper," with the Taj Mahal set inside a circular frame against a rich red ground. The white marble mausoleum at Agra, built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, has long been the natural emblem for India in travel art. This is a modern restored rendering, and the date and artist of any original are not recorded here. Pan Am named its airliners Clippers after the swift sailing ships of the nineteenth century, and "by Clipper" became the signature sign-off on its posters for destinations around the world.
