A Papal Swiss Guard in his plumed helmet stands watch before the dome of St. Peter's Basilica on this 1950 Pan Am poster, Rome by Clipper. The guard and his ceremonial uniform made an instantly recognizable symbol of the Vatican and the Eternal City, and 1950 was a Holy Year that drew pilgrims to Rome from around the world. Pan Am's Rome posters of the early 1950s, including one in the SFO Museum collection, advertised the city as a highlight of its European service. The artist is not recorded.
