A stylized carabao, the water buffalo that works the rice fields of the Philippines, stands on an olive-green ground in this Qantas poster for Manila. The artist and exact date are not recorded. The design fits a series Qantas commissioned in the 1950s and 1960s to sell its overseas destinations to Australian travelers, each represented by a heroic animal portrait: a tiger for Singapore, a squirrel for America and here the carabao for the Philippines. Qantas promoted the Philippines on several posters of the period, as Manila became a stop on its routes north into Asia.
