A cheerful cartoon giraffe stretches across a teal ground in this Qantas poster for South Africa. Dealers attribute the South Africa giraffe design to Harry Rogers (1929-2012), the Australian artist who created Qantas posters from the early 1950s until 1985 and whose playful, animated style reflected his study of animation at UCLA. Versions are dated to around 1960, and some carry the names of partner airlines BOAC, TEAL and South African Airways. Founded in 1920, Qantas is among the world's oldest airlines, and by this era its Flying Kangaroo reached Johannesburg across the Indian Ocean.
