Great birds glide over a calm bay in this Japanese-era railway poster titled for Shantung, the coastal province of northern China now spelled Shandong. Its lettering names the Santō Tetsudō, the Japanese reading of Shandong Railway. The artist and exact date are not recorded in the sources we checked. In the early 20th century Japanese railway companies in northeast China, including the South Manchuria Railway, commissioned striking posters that blended Art Deco design with traditional Japanese painting to promote travel in the region. Cranes, symbols of long life in East Asian art, were a favorite motif for such designs.
