Bold red SWAL lettering slants across a red ring on a pale ground, the simple logo of Southwest Air Lines, the Okinawa carrier known in Japanese as Nansei Koku. The airline was established on 20 June 1967 and began flying that July from Naha, serving the island chain of Okinawa. Japan Airlines took a major stake, and in July 1993 the airline began operating as Japan Transocean Air, the name it flies under today.
