The DC-7 was United's long-range flagship of the mid-1950s, and on May 24, 1954, to promote its new nonstop New York-San Francisco DC-7 service, United flew a group of journalists from New York through San Francisco to Honolulu in a single dawn-to-dusk day. For a Midwestern audience, a headline measured in hours from Chicago, United's home city, made the islands feel suddenly close.
