For this 1957 United Air Lines poster, now in the Poster House collection in New York, Joseph Binder (1898-1972) skipped the usual skyline and chose the United Nations: the glass-curtain Secretariat Building with a row of national flags flying before it and the curved roof of the General Assembly Building nearby. Completed in 1951, the Secretariat was the city's first glass-curtain skyscraper, designed by an international team including Le Corbusier under Wallace K. Harrison. Its pure modernism suited Binder, the Vienna-trained designer who did so much to bring European modern poster design to America.
