A zebra, a Spanish mission bell tower and a great orange sun share the frame in this playful 1961 United Air Lines poster for San Diego. The artist is not recorded. The pairing captures two sides of the city that visitors came for: the famous San Diego Zoo, founded in 1916, and the mission heritage that dates back to 1769, when Mission San Diego de Alcala became the first of the California missions. United's San Diego posters returned to those mission bells more than once over the decade.
