A tower of the Golden Gate Bridge rises out of drifting fog in this misty gray poster painted around 1960 by Stan Galli (1912-2009) for United Air Lines. Galli, a San Francisco native and one of United's most prolific poster artists, gave the city's most famous landmark a quiet, almost sculptural treatment. When the bridge opened in 1937 it was the longest and tallest suspension bridge in the world, with a 4,200-foot main span and towers 746 feet tall, and the summer fog pouring through the Golden Gate is still part of its legend.
