Paper lanterns hang across a busy Chinatown street in this United Air Lines poster for San Francisco from around 1950. The artist is not recorded. San Francisco's Chinatown, the oldest in North America, was rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake with the pagoda-style rooflines and lantern-lined streets that made it one of the city's most visited neighborhoods. United, which kept its maintenance base in San Francisco, featured the city constantly in its postwar posters, when four-engine DC-6 Mainliners were bringing travelers west in record numbers.
