Seen through a shadowed arch, a Spanish mission and its tall palms glow beneath a purple sky in this 1950 United Air Lines poster for Southern California. The artist is not recorded on this copy. The California missions, founded by Franciscan friars from 1769 onward, were among the region's favorite tourist sights, and United's artists returned to them repeatedly, from Santa Barbara to San Diego. The framing arch draws the eye straight to the sunlit facade, a classic poster device for inviting the viewer to step into the scene.
