This dark blue winged emblem reads UNITED AIR LINES around a large 25th, with ANNIVERSARY and the dates 1926-1951 below. The dates mark a quarter century from the airline's earliest roots: on April 6, 1926, Varney Air Lines chief pilot Leon Cuddeback flew the first contract airmail flight from Boise, Idaho, to Pasco, Washington, in a Swallow biplane. Varney was one of the carriers brought together when United Air Lines was formed in 1931, and United still treats that April day as its birthday.
