A tall shield reads UNITED in white on red, AIR LINES in blue on white, and MAINLINERS in white on a deep blue base. Mainliner was the name United gave its airliners, a play on the 'Main Line Airway', the slogan that highlighted its New York-Chicago-San Francisco route until it was retired in 1965. The shield emblem itself was adopted in 1939 and updated in 1954, so this label comes from the airline's piston and early-jet era.
