A bold die-cut shield carries a white star on a red crown, UNITED in heavy black type across a white band, and AIR LINES on a deep blue base. United adopted its shield emblem in 1939, updated it in 1954, and dropped it entirely in the early 1970s, so the design belongs to the airline's propeller and early-jet decades. The company had been formed in 1931 to bring together pioneering airmail carriers, the oldest of which, Varney Air Lines, first flew in April 1926.
