Stan Galli (1912-2009) painted this Washington, D.C. poster for United Air Lines around 1960, looking up at the towering columns of the Lincoln Memorial while tiny visitors make their way below, a simple trick of scale that conveys the monument's grandeur. Galli was one of United's most prolific poster artists of the 1950s and early 1960s, and his work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian. The memorial, designed by Henry Bacon and dedicated in 1922, rings its hall with 36 Doric columns, one for each state in the Union at the time of Lincoln's death.
