Women in traditional costume gather below a hill village clinging to the mountainside in this "Abruzzo" poster by the Italian artist Alicandri. Alicandri designed regional travel posters for ENIT, Italy's national tourism agency, in the 1920s, a series that showcased the country region by region for visitors arriving by rail. The Abruzzo, east of Rome in the central Apennines, was known for its stone villages and its costumes and crafts, and the poster leans into both, setting local life against the high country.
